DM's Color Challenge #9

What a classy color combo this week! I was tempted to make a wedding invitation with these colors, but instead, created a distressed flower birthday card.

Last week, the oh-so-talented Dawn McVey wrote a blog post on how to create distressed flowers. (You know, those purty, multi-layered paper flowers that are all the rage right now!) Well, after reading through the tutorial, which consisted of awesome step-by-step instructions and pictures, I was inspired to create some flowers of my own. And this color challenge was the perfect excuse to do so!

I was pretty pleased with the way this flower turned out, but I had to rip and re-rip a handful of circles before I was happy with the size of each flower layer. You may notice, too, that I adhered two smaller circles together to form the second flower layer. So, in all, there are four separate pieces that make up the flower itself. Adhering the pieces together with Zots (small adhesive dots) was a cinch!

The black strip that goes across the card looks like cardstock, but it's actually velvet ribbon. To pull a little more cream into the card, I threaded cream embroidery thread through the holes of the black button and tied it off in back. I love that DMC embroidery thread is cheap (35 cents!) and comes in a whole host of colors. The black leaves were cut by hand and roughed up a bit on the edges with the blade of my scissors.

You know, it just occurred to me that you're not likely to see GREEN flowers and BLACK leaves out in nature...ha-ha! Apparently, they exist only in my imagination. ;-)

{Birthday Wishes supplies}
Cardstock: Stampin' Up!
Ribbon: Dashes, Dots & Checks (Michael's)
Stamp: Stampin' Up!
Ink: Impress Inkpad (Jet Black)
Button: Unknown
Thread: DMC
Misc: Zots, Pop Dots, Adhesive, Cuttlebug

P.S. For my upcoming birthday, I recently bought myself a Cuttlebug embossing and die-cutting machine.

Normally, they run about $80, but I found one on the clearance rack at Michael's for only $30! SCORE!

For this card, I used my Cuttlebug and the Swiss Dots embossing folder (above) to emboss the green paper with those fun, little dots!

And since embossing folders only run about $5 each, I also bought a Divine Swirls folder (above). Something tells me that I'll be using it on a card soon.
