Flashback Friday

If Noah could talk, I think he would have said: Hey, Mom!  Look at my hair.  Dad styled it!

And here's a close-up of the "do."

It was quite apropos that Noah was wearing a "silly monkey" shirt that day.  Smile.

Both shots were taken October 3, 2012 with my iPhone.  (Noah was almost 9 months old.)

This will be the last Flashback Friday post.  I've truly enjoyed revisiting my photo folders from 2012--and viewing and processing pictures.  But I feel it's time for me to focus instead on editing and sharing photos I've taken this year.

Flashback Friday

It's Friday, which means it's time for another flashback.

Last June, we took Noah camping for the first time.

We hiked.  We cooked.  We ate outside.  We fished.  We snapped photos.  We skipped rocks on the lake.  We cut firewood.  (I'm using "we" loosely here.)  We sat around the campfire (after Noah went to sleep).  We feasted on s'mores.  We tickled Noah.  We read.  We ignored our phones.  We bundled up in our tent trailer.  We talked.  We laughed.

Noah loved it all, and so did we.

In fact, we were having so much fun that we stayed an additional night.

I'm hoping we can go camping again this summer!

December Daily: Days 18-26

Woohoo!

I just finished my 2012 December Daily album.

Before I share the remaining pages of my album, here's a look at the title page:

This photo, taken at Picture People last week, works perfectly as the first page in my album.  I just pulled the photo into Photoshop Elements, added a few words, and printed it at Costco.  (Yes, we had our holiday photos taken AFTER Christmas!  Initially, I was just going to get Noah's first birthday photos taken, but then thought, Why not do holiday photos, too?)

And now, here are days 18-26:

December 18: I made grasshopper mint chocolate bark for the first time, and it was SO easy and SO delicious!  Here's the recipe, in case you're interested in whipping up a batch.

December 19: We're lucky to have a persimmon tree in our front yard, which produces fruit every December.  This year, Brian picked 20 persimmons off the tree!

December 20: The three of us drove to Nevada City for the day.  There, we browsed some shops, bought three Christmas books for Noah, and feasted on a slice of pizza and a calzone at Pete's Pizza.  Noah ate a bit of the pizza AND some of the calzone, too!

December 21: Our cousin, Christa, treated us to lunch at her place.  It's always fun spending time with her, and her enchiladas were awesome.  Even Noah thought so!

December 22: We celebrated Christmas today with my dad's side of the family.  Noah loved playing with all of his cousins!

December 23: I actually took this picture on another day, but wanted to include it in my album.  Although they are rare--especially during the holiday season--low-key days, where we stay in our pajamas, play with toys, read books, and listen to Christmas music, are so much fun.

December 24:We celebrated with Brian's family on Christmas Eve, exchanging gifts, eating, chatting, and just enjoying being together.

December 25: After 8:00 am mass, we drove down to my parents' house where we opened presents and ate brunch before my dad left for work.

I just love this picture of McKayla in her Santa hat.  Can't believe she's in the fifth grade!

Unfortunately, Katie and Preston couldn't be with us this Christmas.  We wanted to let them know we were thinking of them, though, so we snapped the picture above and sent it to them via text message.

Later on that day, we opened gifts with Brian's family and then headed home for dinner and more present opening!  Noah loved ripping open his gifts--once he got the hang of it.  And now, he loves ripping paper of any kind.

December 26: Although I started brainstorming ideas for Noah's birthday party early on in December, I kicked my planning into high gear the day after Christmas.  I found so many cool ideas for the party on --where else?-- Pinterest.  There, I created a "secret" board, where I pinned my finds.  I'm planning to write a separate blog post on Noah's party soon.

I'm really happy with this super simple album.  I love that it's small.  I love that it contains lots of photos and some journaling.  I love that it documents our December days as well as Noah's first Christmas.

Here's hoping you had a magical December, and that your new year is off to a wonderful start!

13 Things I Learned From Running 13.1 Miles

With 2013 approaching, I've been reflecting on what I accomplished this year and contemplating possible goals for next year.

Many of you are likely doing the same.

Running a half marathon was my biggest fitness accomplishment of 2012.

During my training, I wrote this blog post, in which I listed nine things I'd learned so far about running.

After completing my first half marathon, I thought more about the experience, and what I might be able to share with those who are considering running their first half marathon.

What follows are thirteen things I learned from running 13.1 miles.  (Well, technically, I ran way more than 13.1 miles during my training, but I don't feel like adding up all the miles...and math never was my strong suit.  Plus, there's no way I could come up with that many running tips, so let's just go with thirteen, okay?  Okay!)

1 | People of all ages and body types complete half marathons.
It doesn't matter if you're young or old, tall or short, slim or overweight, if you set your mind to it, and devote time to training for it, YOU can run 13.1 miles.

2 | If you think you can, you will.  If you think you can't, you won't.
I'm learning from experience that I'm capable of accomplishing more than I think I can--if I just believe in myself.  During my training, I had to work at blocking out that nagging voice in my head that said, "You're too uncoordinated.  You're too slow.  You're not a real runner.  13.1 miles?  That's just crazy."  I tried hard to push those thoughts out of my mind.  To ignore them.  And to counteract those negative thoughts with positive ones.

3 | Walk, run or do both.  (And don't feel a shred of guilt!)
For years, I never attempted a half marathon because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to run the WHOLE thing.  If I couldn't run the entire time, I thought, Why try?  Then, my husband and I had a great conversation about "running" a half marathon.  Brian said, ever so gently, "You know you don't have to run the whole thing.  I know people who have finished half marathons--even marathons--and they walked."  It was an Aha! moment for me.  My husband had said just what I needed to hear, at just the right time--in the most supportive way.  Thanks to this breakthrough moment, I was finally open to running--and walking--a half marathon.  The day of the run, with my adrenaline pumping, I felt good and ran most of the race.  I walked only when I drank water or took a Gu packet.  But during some of my training runs, I walked a lot.  And I'm okay with that.

4 | Just keep going.
The first two to three miles are always the hardest for me, both physically and mentally.  My body is yelling at me, No, no, no!  Not this again!  I don't wanna run!  Let's go sit on the couch and watch television.  Let's go eat something.  Let's go clean the bathroom.  I have to remind myself, sometimes with each and every foot fall, why I'm doing this.  I have to remind myself of my goal.  I have to remind myself that it will get better.  And it does.  Three miles in, my muscles are warmed up, I've fallen into a rhythm and I feel good.

5 | Listen to your body.
Since I injured my left knee in the past, I paid attention most to my knees.  If my taped knee didn't feel good, I'd re-wrap it.  If it still hurt to run on it, I'd walk for a few minutes.  Or if my right side started hurting, I'd slow down and walk for a minute, placing my right hand on my head.

6 | Use a schedule.
There are lots of half marathon training schedules available online (this is the 12-week schedule I used).  If you don't find one you like, ask a runner friend to recommend one.  Post the schedule in your bedroom, your kitchen, or next to the treadmill--wherever you will see it daily.  It's also helpful to take a picture of your training schedule with your phone. That way, you'll always have it with you, regardless of whether you're at home, at work, or on a trip.

7 | Carve out time.
While you're training for a half marathon, you'll need to find time to run.  Sounds like a no-brainer, but it takes a fair amount of planning and discipline.  You may have to cut back on television time, chat with family members while running on the treadmill, or walk with a friend at the park instead of meeting for lunch.  Also, it's possible that you will have to put some of your other goals on hold until you complete your training.
John C. Maxwell said it well: "Every worthwhile accomplishment has a price tag attached to it.  The question is always whether you are willing to pay the price to attain it--in hard work, sacrifice, patience, faith and endurance."

8 | Track and celebrate your progress.
Consult your training schedule at least once a day to make sure you're running the appropriate distance.  Cross off your runs as you complete them.  Share your running progress with a friend or family member.  Post your runs on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.  Some runners also find it helpful to keep a training journal.  (If I run another half marathon--or a marathon someday--I'm going to purchase the Runner's World Training Journal.)

9 | Cut yourself some slack.
Life happens.  As much as I tried to fit in all my runs according to the schedule, occasionally, I had to move a run to another day, run on a "rest" day, walk instead of run, or skip a run altogether.

10 | Try not to skip your LONG runs.
Find a way to get your long runs in; they will prepare you physically as well as mentally for the half marathon.  You may have to tweak your running schedule to do so or ask a family member, friend or babysitter to watch your child.  I'm so grateful to my husband, parents, and sister for taking care of Noah during my long runs.

11 | Do what works for you.
  • Do you like running alone or with a friend?  My husband (and son) joined me for the shorter runs, and it was nice to have someone to chat with while running.  It makes the miles go by faster, and I'm often motivated to run quicker with a partner.  But I also enjoy jogging by myself.
  • Do you like listening to music while you run?  In past years, I listened to music while I ran outside, but this year, I decided instead to focus on listening to my body and my breathing--and to just enjoy the outdoors.  When I'm running laps in the park, I like to play the five senses game to keep boredom at bay.  I focus on one sense at a time, thinking, What am I hearing?  What am I seeing?  What am I tasting? etc.  My mind fills with descriptive words and thoughts, and oftentimes, I come up with promising story and article ideas.
  •  Do you like watching television or movies while you run?  I knew I'd be completing a few long runs (6+ miles) on the treadmill, so I rented movies from Redbox to keep me entertained.  Watching television shows on the DVR works just as well, too.
12 | Switch it up.
Run in the park.  Jog on the treadmill at home.  Go to the gym.  Run in a new neighborhood.

13 | Let others inspire and guide you.
One of my former teacher colleagues decided to take up running two years ago...at age 60!  He's run several half marathons and mentors others who want to complete half marathons.  Talk about being an inspiration!  Not only can other runners inspire you, but they are also great resources for running tips, recommendations, and advice.  All you have to do is ask.

Do you have any fitness goals for 2013?  Anyone thinking about running a half marathon?

December Daily, Days 10-17

Hello there!

I'm back to share eight more days from my December Daily album.  (If you missed Days 1-9, click here.)

December 10: Rather than share a picture today, I decided to do a bit of journaling using the "loving" prompt.  I stamped l-o-v-i-n-g using a Studio g alphabet stamp set and Stampin' Up! ink.

December 11: Noah still loves to ride in his swing, so when it's not raining, we bundle him up in a sweatshirt and/or jacket and head outside.

December 12: I placed the overlay on top of my photo in Photoshop Elements and had it printed at Costco.  But as you can see, I must have done something wrong because the overlay and journaling are cut off on the sides.  After Christmas, I plan to fix it and reprint it.

Journaling reads: Peek-a-boo is one of Noah's favorite games right now!  He loves to crawl underneath the tree stand, hiding until we say, "Where's Noah?"  Then, he peeks out, smiling and giggling.  I respond enthusiastically, "There you are!"  and he disappears again.

December 13:  You might notice that Noah has the same pajamas on as he did in the previous photo.  That's because I took both photos on December 12!  I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so I included both--one for the 12th and one for the 13th.

Journaling reads: Noah loves pushing this toy cart around the family room, dining room, and kitchen.  He's also fond of moving dining chairs, his high chair--and even a side table--around, too.  It's so much fun watching him cruise around, gaining more and more confidence with each passing day.

December 14:  On this day (and in subsequent days), my thoughts and prayers were with the people of Newtown, Connecticut.  This quote from Mr. Rogers is a perfect one to acknowledge the tragedy, while reminding us to look for the good, for those who are helping others.  A big thanks to Cathy Zielske for offering this free printable on her blog.

December 15: I mailed our Christmas cards today!  Thanks to CardsEtcetera for the card design, and Vistaprint for printing all 70 cards, front and back.

December 16: I sat down at my computer and typed for five minutes, writing whatever came to mind as I thought about Christmas.  With the words I generated, I created this word cloud using Wordle.  It was fun to change the font and color of the text, as well as the shape of the "cloud."  If you want to create your own word cloud, click here.  Keep in mind: If you want a word to appear larger than the others, be sure to include it multiple times in your text.

December 17: Noah had a fun day hanging out with his cousins, McKayla and Zoey!

I'll be back after Christmas with Days 18-25.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

December Daily 2012 Foundation Pages

I'm once again participating in Ali Edwards' December Daily project.

Last week, while Noah napped, I happily assembled the beginnings of my December Daily album while listening to Christmas music on Pandora (Station: Holiday).

This year, I've created a small book with SUPER simple pages, keeping the focus right where I want it to be--on the pictures and the journaling.

Here's a look at my 4x6 album:

This album from Michael's will hold 36 photos.  (Cost: $4.99)

Right now, here's what the inside looks like:

The printable pages, created by Ali Edwards, can be purchased here.  (Cost: $5.99)

You have the option to print the cards in green, red, black or gray.  I chose to print half in green and half in red.

I added ribbon to the first two pages...

...and patterned paper (from my holiday scrapbooking stash) to the third and fourth pages.

I slid the rest of the printed pages into the album with plans to add pictures on the top and decorate the bottom with stickers/washi tape/sequins/buttons later on.

Or I may decide to add the date overlay directly on to some of my photos (using Photoshop Elements), and then print them out.

Speaking of photos, starting December 1, I'll be taking at least one picture a day until Christmas.  You know me, though...I'll probably take way more than one photo a day.  I'll be using my Nikon D90 and my iphone.

I've posted this December Daily photo idea list up in my office, just in case I run out of photo ideas.

I also reread this Ali Edwards' blog post, which contains some great December Daily ideas and inspiration.

During the month of December, in addition to taking photos, I'll be typing notes in my iPhone.  My goal is to jot down one story from each day.  In time, I'll add these stories to my album.

I'm so glad December is just a few days away because I'm SUPER excited to document this holiday season in pictures + words!

Want to join in the fun?  Curious to see what others are creating?  Click here to view an assortment of foundation pages and albums.

P.S. In 2010, I completed a 6x8 December Daily album and shared it here on my blog.  In case you missed them, here are those posts:

Time for a Laugh

Last Sunday, I wrote a post about our trip to Dallas, wherein I shared a boatload of pictures--22 to be exact.

Hopefully, you've fully recovered from photo overload because I have a couple more pictures I want to show you.

Is there such a thing as having too many pictures?  I don't think so...

Here are six pictures that really made me laugh.

Noah wearing Auntie Katie's spectacles.  Doesn't he look a little like the boy from Jerry Maguire

Noah silencing Katie and Preston at the Rangers' game.  It's as if he's telling them, "Hush, the Rangers are playing!"

Noah in jail.  Boo hoo hoo.

Noah on the airplane.  I think he was super excited because 1) he's wearing his jammies...on an airplane 2) he got to sit in his own seat for once and 3) he's holding Daddy's iPhone.  What more could an 8-month-old want?!

I loved these Cowboy 10 Commandments up on the wall in Riscky's Barbeque.  Number 8 is my favorite!

I also loved this sign, which was for sale in a Fort Worth shop.  I contemplated buying one (and placing it in our front yard next to the ADT sign), but it never would have fit in my suitcase.

Darn.

This Summer

A few weeks ago, I was talking to my sister on the phone and she mentioned creating a list of things she wants to do this summer.  A summer bucket list, if you will.

I thought, What a great idea!  Maybe I'll make my own list.

Then, a few days later, what should appear in my inbox?  This blog post from Ali Edwards in which she lays out her "Summer Manifesto."

I thought, Oh, boy...I'm in!

So, without further ado, here's what I hope to do this summer:

- Go camping as a family of three.
- Finalize Noah's adoption.
- Attend a local county fair.
- Plant a peony bush in the yard.  (Number 1 on my Life List.)
- Cook 5 new dinner recipes.
- Take Noah to the pool.
- Write.
- Revamp my blog.
- Pick up my camera and shoot away.
- Don my cowgirl boots.
- Devour a crepe with ice cream inside.
- Keep a list of all the books I read.  (Number 17 on my Life List.)
- Hang photographs in Noah's nursery.
- Go on a date with Brian.
- Learn more about Lightroom.
- Spend time with family and friends.
- Document it all in my Project Life binder.

What's on your summer list?

For Today

Happy New Year!

So far, 2012 is off to a great start.

Here's what is happening around here.

Today...

I am thinking about...what might be in store for me this year.  I'm not planning to write down any formal resolutions.  Sure, I have a few goals in my mind, but by and large, I'm just going to embrace whatever comes along.

I am thankful for...time with my husband.  Last night, he treated me to a delicious dinner: homemade crab bisque, grilled steak, Caesar salad, and garlic bread.  Oh, and cookie dough ice cream for dessert.

I am working on...several upcoming blog posts.  Stay tuned!

I am creating...my 2012 Project Life binder.  I ordered the Clementine Edition binder and core kit, as well as photo pocket pages (Design A and Design C) and big envelope pages.  I'm EXCITED to continue using Project Life to document what's happening in our lives.

I am watching...the movie, Something Borrowed, and really liking it.  I see a lot of myself in the character, Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin).  Have any of you read the book?  Was it better than the movie?

I am loving...vacation time.  Time to reflect, to plan, to sleep, to organize, to play, to dream.

I am reading...Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life Is Your Hidden Strength.  Being an introvert myself, I can definitely relate to many of the author's thoughts and experiences.

I am hoping...to finish up my 2011 Project Life binder this week.  Just need to print out a a handful of photos and slip them into the pocket pages.

A few pictures to share:
